Up here, the difference between masonry that lasts and masonry that fails almost always comes down to water and frost. Good work starts underground, with a footing poured below the frost line and sized to the soil so the wall doesn't settle or heave when the ground freezes and thaws. Skip that and no amount of pretty brickwork on top will save it; the wall cracks from the bottom.

Above grade, the right mortar matters as much as the stone. We match the mortar type to the masonry unit and the exposure, soft enough to flex and breathe on older brick, strong enough to carry load where it needs to. Joints should be tooled tight and shed water, not hold it. We build in weep holes and flashing on veneer so any water that gets behind the brick has a clear path back out, because trapped water that freezes is what splits a wall.

You can read the failure signs yourself. Crumbling or powdery mortar you can scratch out with a key means the joints have given up and water is getting in. Brick faces flaking or popping off, called spalling, usually means moisture froze inside the brick. Stair-step cracks running through the mortar joints point to settling or a footing problem. White chalky residue, efflorescence, tells you water is moving through the masonry. A bowed or leaning wall means it's time to act before it comes down. Catch these early and a repointing or a localized rebuild solves it. Wait, and you're rebuilding the whole wall.
